World News - Coal mining deaths surge in 2017 after hitting record low Coal mining deaths surged in the US in 2017, one year after they hit a record low.The nation's coal mines recorded 15 deaths last year, including eight in West Virginia. That is nearly double the death toll in 2016, when eight people died in coal mining incidents.West Virginia has led the nation in coal mining deaths in six of the past eight years.Although Wyoming produces the most coal of any state, there was only one death there last year, as less dangerous surface mining is more common in the state.Kentucky had two deaths, and there were one each in Alabama, Colorado, Montana, Pennsylvania.Last year's fatalities represented the highest death toll since 2014, when 16 miners died. That includes 2010, when 29 miners were killed in an explosion at the Upper Big Branch mine in southern West Virginia. In September, retired coal company executive David Zatezalo of Wheeling, West Virginia was appointed by President Donald Trump as the new chief of the Mine Safety and Health Administration.Trump made promises to revive Appalachia's flagging coal mining industry one of the hallmarks of his presidential campaign.Employment in the coal mining industry has rebounded somewhat since his election. In November, there were 51,200 people employed in the US coal mining industry, up from 49,700 a year prior, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In the mid 1980s, employment in the industry topped 178,000, but has been in a state of steady decline ever since, due in part to advances in technology.More recently, competition from natural gas - which has dropped in price due to the fracking boom - has put pressure on the US coal industry.Republicans have also blamed environment regulations, and Trump has made some moves to roll back Obama-era regulations such as the Stream Protection Rule. more at http://quickfound.net/ "Mine Safety and Health Administration Locating and Rescue of Trapped Miners... This video describes the equipment and methods used to locate trapped miners in an underground mine environment." NEW VERSION with improved video & sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy-m2n8Id2I Public domain film from the National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mining_accident A mining accident is an accident that occurs during the process of mining minerals. Thousands of miners die from mining accidents each year, especially in the processes of coal mining and hard rock mining. Most of the deaths nowadays occur in developing countries, especially China and rural parts of developed countries... Causes Mining accidents can have a variety of causes, including leaks of poisonous gases such as hydrogen sulfide[1] or explosive natural gases, especially firedamp or methane, dust explosions, collapsing of mine stopes, mining-induced seismicity, flooding, or general mechanical errors from improperly used or malfunctioning mining equipment (such as safety lamps or electrical equipment). Use of improper explosives underground can also cause methane and coal-dust explosions. Accidents by country Australia New South Wales's Mount Kembla Mine disaster of 31 July 1902 was an explosion resulting in the death of 96 miners, including two engaged in rescue work. An explosion at the Mount Mulligan mine on 19 September 1921 killed 75 workers. Only 11 bodies could be recovered... Canada The most well-known mining accidents in Canada have all occurred within the province of Nova Scotia. These include a series of disasters referred to collectively as the Springhill mining disasters, as well as the Westray Mine disaster in 1992. The Hillcrest mine disaster, the worst coal mining disaster of Canadian history, occurred in Alberta in 1914... China According to one source, in 2003 China accounted for the largest number of coal-mining fatalities, accounting for about 80% of the world's total, although it produced only 35% of the world's coal. Between January 2001 and October 2004, there were 188 accidents that had a death toll of more than 10, about one such accident every 7.4 days. After the 2005 Sunjiawan mine disaster, which killed at least 210 miners, a meeting of the State Council was convened to work on measures to improve work safety in coal mines. The meeting's statement indicated serious problems such as violation of safety standards and overproduction in some coal mines. Three billion yuan (360 million US dollars) were dedicated for technological renovation on work safety, gas management in particular, at state-owned major coal mines. The government also promised to send safety supervision teams to 45 coal mines with serious gas problems and invite colliery safety experts to evaluate safety situations in coal mines and formulate prevention measures... United States The Monongah Mining Disaster was the worst mining accident of American history; 362 workers were killed in an underground explosion on December 6, 1907 in Monongah, West Virginia. From 1880 to 1910, mine accidents claimed thousands of fatalities. Where annual mining deaths had numbered more than 1,000 a year during the early part of the 20th century, they decreased to an average of about 500 during the late 1950s, and to 93 during the 1990s. In addition to deaths, many thousands more are injured (an average of 21,351 injuries per year between 1991 and 1999), but overall there has been a downward trend of deaths and injuries. In 1959, the Knox Mine Disaster occurred in Port Griffith, Pennsylvania. The swelling Susquehanna river collapsed into a mine under it and resulted in 12 deaths. In Plymouth, Pennsylvania, the Avondale Mine Disaster resulted in the deaths of 108 miners and two rescue workers after a fire in the only shaft eliminated the oxygen in the mine. Federal laws for mining safety ensued this disaster. Pennsylvania suffered another disaster in 2002 at Quecreek, 9 miners were trapped underground and subsequently rescued after 78 hours. During 2006, 72 miners lost their lives at work, 47 by coal mining. The majority of these fatalities occurred in Kentucky and West Virginia, including the Sago Mine Disaster. On April 5, 2010, in the Upper Big Branch Mine disaster an underground explosion caused the deaths of 29 miners. The U.S. Bureau of Mines was created in 1910 to investigate accidents, advise industry, conduct production and safety research, and teach courses in accident prevention, first aid, and mine rescue. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Acts of 1969 and 1977 set further safety standards for the industry...

It has the highest carbon content, the fewest impurities, and the highest calorific content of all types of coals, which also include bituminous coal and lignite. Anthracite is the most metamorphosed type of coal (but still represents low-grade metamorphism), in which the carbon content is between 92.1% and 98%. The term is applied to those varieties of coal which do not give off tarry or other hydrocarbon vapours when heated below their point of ignition. Anthracite ignites with difficulty and burns with a short, blue, and smokeless flame. Anthracite is categorized into standard grade, which is used mainly in power generation, and high grade (HG) and ultra high grade (UHG), the principal uses of which are in the metallurgy sector. Anthracite accounts for about 1% of global coal reserves, and is mined in only a few countries around the world. China accounts for the majority of global production; other producers are Russia, Ukraine, North Korea, Vietnam, the UK, Australia and the US. Total production in 2010 was 670 million tons... Other terms which refer to anthracite are black coal, hard coal, stone coal... blind coal... Kilkenny coal... crow coal... and black diamond. In the United States, anthracite coal history began in 1790 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, with the discovery of coal made by the hunter Necho Allen in what is now known as the Coal Region. Legend has it that Allen fell asleep at the base of Broad Mountain and woke to the sight of a large fire because his campfire had ignited an outcropping of anthracite coal. By 1795, an anthracite-fired iron furnace had been built on the Schuylkill River. Anthracite was first experimentally burned as a residential heating fuel in the US on 11 February 1808, by Judge Jesse Fell in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on an open grate in a fireplace. Anthracite differs from wood in that it needs a draft from the bottom, and Judge Fell proved with his grate design that it was a viable heating fuel. In spring 1808, John and Abijah Smith shipped the first commercially mined load of anthracite down the Susquehanna River from Plymouth, Pennsylvania, marking the birth of commercial anthracite mining in the United States. From that first mine, production rose to an all-time high of over 100 million tons in 1917... From the late 19th century until the 1950s, anthracite was the most popular fuel for heating homes and other buildings in the northern United States, until it was supplanted first by oil burning systems and more recently by natural gas systems... China today mines by far the largest share of global anthracite production, accounting for more than three-quarters of global output. Most Chinese production is of standard-grade anthracite, which is used in power generation. Increased demand in China has made that country into a net importer of the fuel, mostly from Vietnam, another major producer of anthracite for power generation, although increasing domestic consumption in Vietnam means that exports may be scaled back. Current U.S. anthracite production averages around 5 million tons per year. Of that, about 1.8 million tons were mined in the state of Pennsylvania...

Blind Chinese Coal Miner Teaches Safety to Fellow Workers

For more news and videos visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevision Add us on Facebook ☛ http://facebook.com/NTDTelevision China's mining industry is poorly regulated. Thousands of miners die every year in accidents. Now one miner, the victim of an accident himself, is trying to make a difference, holding classes to educate fellow miners in safety regulations. China has the largest coal mining industry in the world, employing around 5 million people. It's also the most dangerous, with the death toll from mining-related accidents estimated to be as high as 20 thousand per year. Song Dejin was one of the lucky ones. Nine years ago, he escaped from an explosion and gas fire at the mine where he worked—but the accident left him blind. Song eventually came to terms with his injury—and decided to use it to make a difference. He now runs safety training courses for fellow miners. It's an area where authorities and mine owners often fail. [Song Dejin, Mine Security Officer]: "Every miner must put safety first when working in the mine." Those who attend his lectures acknowledge Song's authority on the subject. [Lun Yan, East China Sea Coal Mine]: "After I became a gas inspector in the mine, I have taken security training courses from Song Dejin. Song has based his lectures on his own experiences." And believe it or not Song still works in the mining industry. His commitment to teaching safety is a long term project. [Song Dejin, Mine Security Officer]: "I'll be 60 next year and about to retire, but I would keep on with the lectures for the sake of the miners and their families." A project that can make a difference to one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

Ever Seen the Inside of an Active Coal Mine- A LongWall Mining Machine in Action?

11:22
McClure #1 Mine about 30 years ago. One of the deepest, largest, and most dangerous mines in the country.Known as a 'Hot" mine- This mine released over 3 million cubic yards of explosive methane gas per day. It had at least 1 fatality per year for every year it was open. In 1983 it made national news when it exploded and 7 were killed including the first woman killed in a mining disaster. What you are seeing in this footage is a massive "Long-wall" machine which sheers off a shelf of coal sometimes up to 2,000 feet long at a time. The Hydraulic Jacks or 'Shields" which are constantly adjusted support the roof of this part of the mine as the machine advances. Unlike a traditional "pillar' mine, in which tunnels are cut in a honeycomb fashion, by a 'continuous miner, a longwall has cutting wheels on both ends and goes back and forth and removes football fields in a single shift. Another difference id the roof in the area already mined (Gob) is allowed to collapse, which causes subsidence of everything above ground-streams disappear and divert underground, foundations of buildings collapse, cracks and sinkholes swallow farm animals and wildlife. My cousin gave me this rare, never-before seen footage ten years ago, hoping I could use it to show people the brutality of coal mining-underground, particularly Long-Wall mines is not much better than blasting off mountaintops. It still produces acid mine runoff, in addition to surface subsidence, it is extremely dangerous-the workers are wearing no breathing protection, nor ear protection, they are surrounded by dangers of electrocution, rock falls, explosions, being crushed to death, being ground up like meat, and a dozen other ways to die in a mine...The Upper Big Branch Mine explosion (2010) was a Long-Wall mine and the deadliest since this mine blew in 1983. All forms of American Coal Mining are deadly, destructive, and unacceptable in the 21st century to have an average of 180 fatalities in our mines per year! In Germany they have ZERO fatalities, and almost zero impact on property and the environment-Makes you wonder what the difference is between here and there??? I included it in a documentary film in 2007, which was submitted to several regional groups, along with a paper that received an invite to a conference at a University in the Carolinas...I suppose it got shelved and forgotten. Well here it is on YouTube for all the world to see.

10 Countries Most Afflicted By Modern Slavery

07:06
The ten countries with the most people in modern slavery (victims of human trafficking). Subscribe to TDC: https://www.youtube.com/TheDailyConversation/ The study: https://www.globalslaveryindex.org/findings/ Get involved: http://www.freetheslaves.net/ Full interview with Kevin Bales: http://n.pr/1S54uR7 Video researched, written, narrated, and directed by Bryce Plank Visualization and editing by Robin West Music: "Enter the Maze" by Kevin MacLeod http://incompetech.com/ "Phife for Life" by Otis McDonald Script: Slavery used to look like this, then it evolved into this, and today it looks like this. In fact, there are an estimated 45.8 million people living in modern slavery across 167 different countries. They fall into three general categories: children held in the commercial sex trade; adults held in the commercial sex trade; and any other laborer made to work through force, fraud, or coercion. The trafficking victim often looks like anybody else at work in a mine, on a farm, in a factory. Many are lured by promises of a steady job in another country, only to have their passports confiscated when they arrive. However, many slaves work in their native countries or even the cities where they were born. According to The Global Slavery Index, these ten countries are home to the most modern slaves. They each suffer from income inequality, discrimination and classism, and entrenched corruption. Number ten, Indonesia, produces about 35% of the world’s palm oil. The many small palm plantations present an immense challenge to inspectors trying to crack down on child labor. The country’s many islands are also home to tens of thousands of enslaved fisherman trafficked from Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia. Number nine is the Democratic Republic of Congo. 20,000 of the DRC’s more than 870,000 slaves live in one of the most hellish landscapes on the planet, a vast ore mine in the east of the country. The terrorist group Boko Haram gets overshadowed by ISIS, although it kills more people. When it comes to enslavement, one of its tactics is to give Nigerian entrepreneurs loans and then force them to join their group if they fail to repay fast enough. Seventh is Russia. 55% of the slaves there work in construction. Foreigners are lured mainly from nearby Azerbaijan, the “stans,” Ukraine, and North Korea—thanks to this border on the far eastern edge of Russia. The North Korean government is the world’s largest single slaveholder. Not only does it force more than one million of its people to toil in labor camps and other similarly hopeless situations, but it actually loans out some people to work in neighboring China and Russia, then pockets most of their wages. This exploitation generates about $2.3B each year for the Kim Jong-un regime. The fifth most enslaved country, Uzbekistan, is the world’s sixth largest producer of cotton. It has benefited from forced labor, as the government puts more than 1 million people to work using threats of debt bondage, heavy fines, asset confiscation, and police intimidation. Slave recruiters in Bangladesh promise poor families that their boys will be given a job, only to be enslaved on a faraway island and beaten to clean fish for up to 24 hours straight. Often, these fish are exported as cat food for our pets. Sometimes, the boys meet a gruesome death when they are eaten by tigers while searching for firewood. Third is Pakistan, which has suffered through decades of conflict, terrorism, and displacement—especially along its northwestern border with Afghanistan. Its provinces have not raised the minimum age of marriage, which has allowed the widespread problem of forced and child weddings to continue. Over 250 million Chinese have migrated within the country to find better opportunities, creating the ideal conditions for human trafficking. Each year, 58 million children are ‘left behind’ as their parents search of work in the China’s many booming cities. Every year, up to 70,000 children fall into forced begging, illegal adoption, and sex slavery. And number one is India, which has - by far - the most victims of modern slavery. While economic growth has greatly reduced the percentage of its citizens living in poverty, the country’s sheer size still results in more than 270 million Indians living on less than $2/day. It’s unsurprising that inter-generational bonded labor, forced child labor, commercial sexual exploitation, forced begging, forced recruitment into nonstate armed groups, and forced marriage all exist in India. The government has already created many of the laws necessary to fight the epidemic, but the challenge is enforcing those laws and tracking improvements and areas of continued need.

The World's Largest Abandoned City - Ordos

04:36
Ordos The World’s Largest Abandoned City The development of the city of Ordos is a unique tale. Ordos is a city designed from scratch and built within 10 years. This city came to fruition after private mining companies were given the rights to dig into deposits in the late 90’s and 2000’s. This generated a lot of tax revenue making Ordos the 2nd highest income per capita city in China. Ordos is a city located in Inner Mongolia that has been constantly been burdened with water shortage issues. Instead of trying to revamp the current infrastructure the Chinese government decided to rebuild the city from scratch which is called “New Ordos” just 16 miles or 25 km kilometers away from the existing city now called “Old Ordos”. The people of Old Ordos refer to New Ordos as the Kangbashi district of Ordos, these new and old labels are basically not supported by anyone locally. Two villages built around the Wulan Mulan River were demolished and construction started in 2005. 161 billion dollars in infrastructure was invested to build the Kangbashi District over the first 5 years. Regardless if anyone lives in this new city, this is a major plus to the government of China as it increases China’s GDP. The government gave kickbacks to developers who helped boost GDP so building anything anywhere is promoted. The old city of Ordos or Dongsheng is home to over ½ a million people, it was expected that many of them would move to the new city as it became completed. As explained by many locals, a working couple only makes $800 a month combined of which ⅓ is taken for rent. The new apartments in New Ordos sell for 70 - 100 thousand dollars making it virtually impossible for locals to live there. Sales were slow at first but eventually investors snapped up many of the units in the new city. This has left New Ordos with a ton of infrastructure and no residents. The city was originally designed to hold 1 million people but was scaled down during construction to 500,000 then to 300,000 after coal prices crashed. The city features a 5 story shopping mall, impressive monuments and statues, art and city museum, the Ordos Dongsheng Stadium that seats 35,000 people, opera house, a brand new airport and a modern designed mosque. The city streets are lined with skyscraper after skyscraper that are almost completely empty. A toy store is one of the only stores in the massive 5 story mall, the man who runs the store says he sells something every few days and if the government doesn’t step in soon to fix it, he may have to move back to Dongsheng. It is estimated only 2 % of the buildings were ever filled the rest remain abandoned. Outside the mall an elaborate water show is put on every night with only a few people found to be watching it. A water show this size in a normal city would draw thousands of viewers daily. The city has everything it needs to be a great thriving new city like extra wide roads with bike lanes like what is found in Taipei, modern amenities and infrastructure but simply no people. The initial wave of 30,000 people that moved to New Ordos all lived in a 4 to 5 block radius just north of central park. A few years later that grew to 60,000 and now 12 years after the start of construction there are around 150,000 residents in a city that was originally designed for 1 million. The city has been doing many things to attract people to live there like moving the best schools from Dongsheng to Kangbashi. While some areas of Kangbashi aren’t a ghost town at all today, many still are. One abandoned project is the Ordos 100 Project, which is a project that was to have 100 different extreme luxury villas designed. Instead of the government doing it themselves they invited 100 different architects from around the world to each design a luxury villas to be placed on the map. Land sections were given out with the utmost creative freedom except the design was not to look like traditional Mongolian designs such as Yurts. Silver Mine Deficits set to Explode BIG in 2016

03:44
Get our Free Silver Report with Top Investment Idea NOW: http://FutureMoneyTrends.com/Silver Silver Will Soon Spike Significantly Higher The Silver Supply Deficit is About to Explode A real annual physical deficit is about to erupt higher in the silver market. In 2014, the world had a 78.6 million ounce deficit in worldwide supply vs. physical demand. The 2015 deficit ballooned much higher, to a 130 million ounce shortfall. According to Societe Generale, the silver supply in 2016 is likely to decrease another 9.2%! This, of course, has everything to do with base metal mine cutbacks. Of which have seen major mines close down in the past 2 years, including 26 zinc mines just announced for temperory closure in China until next June. It’s important for everyone watching this to know that most silver comes from copper, zinc, and gold mines. A silver mine is extremely rare, most investors, even silver indexes, aren’t really buying companies that generate their income from silver. Typically the name of the company has more silver in it than their actual business! And some of the names might shock you… Silver Standard, Hecla Mining, and Tahoe Resources… these are silver stocks, right?   Well, sort of, but less than half of their revenues comes from silver. What about Pan American Silver, the largest publicly-traded silver producer? About half of their revenues come from gold and base metals.   Even with the largest private silver miner in the world, Fresnillo, under 50% of their revenues are generated from silver. If you’re looking for true silver plays, go to FutureMoneyTrends.com/silver for our top suggestions. One of which currently generates 70% of their income from silver, and will soon reach 80%! Silver demand, which has been on the rise, is surging! And as we pointed out, supply is cliff diving due to base metal mine closures and cutbacks. The U.S. Mint is on track to sell a record amount of coins this year! FutureMoneyTrends.com believes that the demand for silver is about to surge much higher. 1. We have a confirmed bull market in 2016. 2. One-third of the central banks have a negative interest rate policy. The investment demand for silver won’t be regional – it’s going to be global! 3. The mining shares are a leading indicator, and our two top picks for this sector are up over 600% year to date. Physical bullion is headed much higher and industry leaders are starting to acknowledge it. Earlier this year, a major tech company contacted First Majestic Silver to inquire about purchasing silver directly from the company. For a precious metal like silver, this is not a normal inquiry at all! According to the COMEX their should be an abundant supply of silver. But now, with Asian markets competing and actually demanding real metal to back there trades, the silver market is at an inflection point, and we agree with Keith Neumeyer, CEO of the worlds top primary silver producer, triple digit silver is in the very near future. To learn more about silver and how you can profit, either with physical metal or mining shares, please go to FutureMoneyTrends.com/silver

RESTRICTIONS: Broadcast: NO USE JAPAN, NO USE TAIWAN Digital: NO USE JAPAN, NO USE TAIWAN New research posits that Bitcoin mining will consume half a percent of the world's total electricity by the end of 2018, then 5 percent in a few years. According to research published in the journal Joule, the same amount of electricity used in one Bitcoin transaction could power the average Dutch household for a month. The study says the Bitcoin network currently consumes 2.55 gigawatts of electricity, nearly the same as Ireland. By the end of 2018, the study predicts predicts that number rise to 7.8 gigawatts. Bitcoin transactions require massive computational power, and thereby large amounts of electricity to function. Computers in the decentralized Bitcoin network calculating transactions compete every 10 minutes to create the next block of transactions in the chain. Known as Bitcoin mining, this process sees the winning hardware get 12.5 bitcoins, or around $100,000. However, as Bitcoin calculations become more difficult to solve people employing more computational power have a higher chance of winning. The problem with this, study author Alex Devries explained to Gizmodo, is that the process motivates participants in the network to use more hardware, and as a result more power. RUNDOWN SHOWS: 1. SOUNDBITE: (English) Linda Stark, resident close to Sago Mine "I am happy that the mine is reopening and I am sure it will be reopened with extra mindfulness toward the safety precautions and procedures that need to take place." 16. Exterior view of restaurant STORYLINE With the Sago mine tragedy still fresh in their minds, miners went back underground on Wednesday and started digging coal for the first time since explosion killed 12 of their comrades just ten weeks ago. The blast had caught the first crews returning to work after the New Year's holiday on 2 January. Although the owners of the mine, International Coal Group Inc can not yet fully explain what happened, it is believed that electricity from above - probably a lightning strike - had found some conduit into the earth and sparked methane gas that had accumulated in a sealed-off chamber. According to Ben Hatfield, chief executive officer of International Coal Group Inc, a decision to resume production had been delayed until initial findings which suggested the cause of the January blast could have been lightning had been made known. The United Mine Workers called the company's announcement of this finding "unprecedented, reckless and premature." Hatfield said he had also made a promise to the families that lessons would be learned from the disaster, and that coal mines would be made safer. On Wednesday, nearly all the workers at the mine, which produces 800,000 tons of coal per year, were expected to return to work. One of them, Ron Grall, completed his shift and pronounced it "a good day." Buckhannon residents welcomed the reopening of the mine. Barber Jim Gregory said people in the town mostly wanted to "get back with it" and that the mood was upbeat. Diners at a local restaurant expressed their confidence that the mine was reopening with safety being made a priority for the mine's owners and operators. World News - Coal mining exec who did time running for Senate A mining company CEO who did time in prison for conspiring to violate mine safety in connection with a massive mine explosion is running against Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin in West Virginia.Don Blankenship did a year-long stint in a California prison after getting convicted of willfully breaking safety standards. He got convicted after the Upper Big Branch disaster that resulted in the deaths of 29 miners in 2010.Manchin won election in 2012 with 60 per cent of the vote, but is considered vulnerable because of the voting patterns in the state he represents. He voted through most of President Trump's nominees, and votes with the president about two-thirds of the time.A spokesman confirmed the ex-Massey Energy CEO will run against Manchin.Blankenship is a longtime critic of Manchin, wchstv reported. Manchin said in a statement 'He won’t be distracted by [Senate GOP leader] Mitch McConnell’s backroom deals in Washington, D.C.'Blankenship spokesman Greg Thomas said the formal filing was expected Wednesday. The Senate clerk's office says it hasn't received it yet.The 67-year-old Blankenship was released from a federal prison in California in May after serving a one-year term related to a deadly mine explosion. He's serving one year of supervised release.Blankenship was sentenced last year for a misdemeanor conviction of conspiring to violate federal mine safety standards at Massey's Upper Big Branch Mine in southern West Virginia, where 29 workers died in a 2010 explosion. The U.S. Supreme Court recently rejected Blankenship's bid to appeal. Two other Repubilans, Rep. Evan Jenkins and state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey are also seeking to challenge Manchin. While very few leaders were beheaded in the course of this one, it changed the lives of more people more dramatically than any of the political revolutions we've discussed. So, why did the Industrial Revolution happen around 1750 in the United Kingdom? Coal. Easily accessible coal, it turns out. The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age

02:08:21
The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2010-04-14 - For the first time in recent memory, the CEOs of America's top two coal mining companies, and a leading international company, came to Capitol Hill to answer questions on their positions on climate change, clean energy policy, and the challenges that face their industry. "Just as our national energy policy is at a crossroads, so, too, is the coal industry," said Rep. Edward J. Markey, who chairs the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, the committee that hosted the CEOs. "Whether it's climate science, the viability of 'clean coal,' or safety concerns, I believe Congress requires answers from the coal industry on their ability to be a part of our clean energy future." As Congress continues to push for a comprehensive clean energy and climate bill, questions remain regarding the coal industry's position on the essential science of climate change and their potential to provide cleaner, lower-carbon fuel in the decades to come. The House-passed Waxman-Markey bill offered a pathway for coal to transition to carbon capture and sequestration technologies. The coal mining industry has seen significant developments over the last two weeks. A mining accident in West Virginia has renewed questions about the safety of coal extraction, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has offered new rules on the environmental and health impacts of mountaintop mining. TESTIMONY: Gregory Boyce, President and Chief Executive Officer, Peabody Energy Corporation; Steven F. Leer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Arch Coal, Inc.; Preston Chiaro, Chief Executive for Energy and Minerals, Rio Tinto; Michael Carey, President, Ohio Coal Association. Video provided by the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Most Radioactive Places on Earth

11:18
Who on Earth is exposed to the most ionizing radiation? Check out Audible: http://bit.ly/AudibleVe I'm filming a documentary for TV about how Uranium and radioactivity have shaped the modern world. It will be broadcast in mid-2015, details to come. The filming took me to the most radioactive places on Earth (and some places, which surprisingly aren't as radioactive as you'd think). Chernobyl and Fukushima were incredible to see as they present post-apocalyptic landscapes. I also visited nuclear power plants, research reactors, Marie Curie's institute, Einstein's apartment, nuclear medicine areas of hospitals, uranium mines, nuclear bomb sites, and interviewed numerous experts. Notes about measuring radiation: Sieverts are a measure of 'effective dose' - that means they measure the biological impact of the energy transferred to tissues from radiation. Obviously I owe a debt to the fantastic chart made by xkcd, which inspired my visual approach to this video. https://xkcd.com/radiation/ DOSES MAY VARY The level of radiation varies widely around the world depending mainly on altitude and geology (excluding nuclear accidents). Estimates of particular doses also vary. All numbers reported in this video should be taken as order of magnitude only. The most contentious claim may be that smokers receive the highest dose of ionizing radiation. This is not a whole body dose, but a dose to the lungs as specified in the video. Modern Mine Safety: A Union of Technology and Culture

33:08
Mine site accidents can be devastating events with far-reaching consequences. According the U.S. Mine Safety & Health Administration there is an average of 40 open-pit heavy vehicle incidents per year resulting in six fatalities. Moreover, the costs incurred from such accidents can easily reach millions of dollars, even before considering the implications of insurance, investigation expenses, workforce morale, publicity, share values, and so on. Mining companies around the world are recognizing the importance of mine safety and are setting goals to eliminate accidents and achieve a safer and healthier workplace. Reaching these goals, however, is not easy. Fortunately, advancements in modern mining technology in conjunction with cultural and behavioral shifts can provide your organization with the tools and knowledge to meet and exceed your safety goals. Watch and listen to Modular's Machine Guidance Product Manager, Bill Nassauer to learn about Modular's current and future safety solutions and how they can help your organization achieve its safety goals.

World Is Mine (English Cover)【JubyPhonic】ワールドイズマイン

▶▶ Help choose my next song by donating! https://www.patreon.com/JubyPhonic I went to Miku Expo NYC yesterday!! It was my second time going but this time I met up with some other YouTubers before and after the show. I had a wonderful lunch with Dj-Jo, Empath P, Parecki, and Circus P and then went to karaoke with Eyeris, Myst, and their group after the show. Despite my sore thighs, I had a great time seeing everyone and watching Miku tear it up on stage. Favorite is still somewhere between Tokyo Teddy Bear and Sankyuu aaaaa goddddd so good! But why cover World Is Mine? So this song was not only the opening song to Miku Expo but also it was chosen by my 5$ Patrons as my next song to sing! After many things going wrong like all my recordings being deleted, final exams happening, and just utter insanity- it's done! And I hope I was able to make it as funny and cute as I remember back when I first discovered tsundere princess Miku. Honestly, it's really nerve wracking covering a classic like this but maybe I can bring something fun to it, who knows? Hope y'all like it! Down At The Bottom [ original song ]

03:21
a Coal Miners Song © t. hutton 2014, FOR MORE GO TO ----- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KehdPoDZ4eY --- In England, The Oaks explosion remains the worst mining accident, claiming 388 lives on 12 December 1866 near Barnsley in Yorkshire. The Hulton Colliery explosion at Westhoughton, Lancashire, in 1910 claimed the lives of 344 miners. An explosion in 1878, at the Wood Pit, Haydock, Lancashire, killed over 200 workers, although only 189 were included in the 'official list'. Another disaster that killed many miners was the Hartley Colliery Disaster, which occurred in January 1862 when the beam of the main steam winding engine broke suddenly and fell into the single shaft serving the pit. It blocked the shaft, and entombed hundreds of miners. The final death toll was 204, most of whom were suffocated by the lack of oxygen in the mine atmosphere. In the metalliferous mines of Cornwall, some of the worst accidents were at East Wheal Rose in 1846, where 39 workers were killed by a sudden flood; at Levant mine in 1919, where 31 were killed and many injured in a failure of the man engine;[33] 12 killed at Wheal Agar in 1883 when a cage fell down a shaft;[34] and seven killed at Dolcoath mine in 1893 when a large stull collapsed. Scotland The worst mining accident in Scotland is the 1877 Blantyre mining disaster in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, which claimed 207 lives. For several tense days in September 1950, another worst accident happened on the small Ayrshire mining village. The world paused with bated breath as rescuers battled bravely against all odds to reach the 129 men trapped deep underground when a field above where they were working caved-in, flooding the mine workings with thick liquid peat, cutting off all means of escape. Wales Crowd gathering at the pit head of the Senghenydd Colliery after the explosion in October 1913 During the period 1850 to 1930 the South Wales coalfield had the worst disaster record. This was due to the increasing number of mines being sunk to greater depths into gas-containing strata, combined with poor safety and management practices. As a result there were nearly forty underground explosions in the Glamorgan and Monmouthshire areas of the coalfield during this time. Each accident resulted in the deaths of twenty or more workers - either directly in the explosion or by suffocation by the poisonous gases formed. The total death toll from these disasters was 3,119 people. The four worst accidents in Wales were: 439 deaths at the Senghenydd Colliery Disaster at Universal Colliery in Senghenydd, Glamorgan, in a gas explosion in 1913. 290 deaths at the Albion Colliery in Cilfynydd, Glamorgan, in a gas explosion on 25 June 1894. 272 deaths at the Prince of Wales Colliery, Abercarn, Monmouthshire, in an explosion of 11 September 1878. 266 deaths in the Gresford Disaster near Wrexham in North Wales on 22 September 1934. Some collieries, e.g. Morfa Colliery near Port Talbot, Glamorgan, and Black Vein Colliery, Risca, Monmouthshire, suffered three disasters before they were closed for being unsafe. In Plymouth, Pennsylvania, the Avondale Mine Disaster of 1869 resulted in the deaths of 108 miners and two rescue workers after a fire in the only shaft eliminated the oxygen in the mine. Federal laws for mining safety resulted from this disaster. Pennsylvania suffered another disaster in 2002 at Quecreek, 9 miners were trapped underground and subsequently rescued after 78 hours. During 2006, 72 miners lost their lives at work, 47 by coal mining. The majority of these fatalities occurred in Kentucky and West Virginia, including the Sago Mine Disaster.[40][41] On April 5, 2010, in the Upper Big Branch Mine disaster an underground explosion caused the deaths of 29 miners. The U.S. Bureau of Mines was created in 1910 to investigate accidents, advise industry, conduct production and safety research, and teach courses in accident prevention, first aid, and mine rescue. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Acts of 1969 and 1977 set further safety standards for the mining.

Michael Jackson - Man In The Mirror (Official Video)

05:04
In keeping with the lyrical message of "Man in the Mirror," which was strongly identified with Michael Jackson and reflective of his own philosophies, the short film features powerful images of events and leaders whose work embodies the song's message to "make that change." Rolling Stone praised the short film in 2014 as "a powerful statement to deliver to personality-driven MTV." Buy/Listen to Bad 25: Amazon - http://smarturl.it/mj_bad25_amzn?IQid=ytd.mj.mitm iTunes - http://smarturl.it/MJ_Bad25A_iTunes?IQid=ytd.mj.mitm Official Store - http://smarturl.it/MJBAD25_OS?IQid=ytd.mj.mitm Spotify - http://smarturl.it/MJ_Bad_Sptfy?IQid=ytd.mj.mitm Written by Siedah Garrett and Glen Ballard Produced by Quincy Jones for Quincy Jones Productions Co-Produced by Michael Jackson for MJJ Productions, Inc. From the album Bad, released August 31, 1987 Released as a single January 16, 1988 THE SHORT FILM Director: Don Wilson Michael Jackson's short film for "Man in the Mirror" was the third of nine short films produced for recordings from Bad, one of the best selling albums of all time. The "Man in the Mirror" single hit No. 1 in four countries in 1988, topping the charts in the United States, Italy, Belgium and Poland and reaching Top 5 in Canada, Ireland and New Zealand. In the U.S., "Man in the Mirror" was the fourth of five consecutive No. 1 singles from one album on the Billboard Hot 100-making Michael the first artist to achieve this milestone. "Man in the Mirror," written by Siedah Garrett (Michael's duet partner on "I Just Can't Stop Loving You") and Glen Ballard, is one of only two songs on Bad not written by Michael Jackson and, even though it wasn't a song he wrote himself, it was a message that was strongly identified with him and reflective of his own philosophies, as demonstrated through his actions and expressed in some of his own lyrics. "'Man in the Mirror' has a great message," he wrote in his 1988 memoir Moonwalk. "I love that song. ..Start with yourself. Don't be looking at all the other things. Start with you. That's the truth." A review of Bad in Rolling Stone in 1987 called the song "among the half dozen best things Jackson has done." In contrast to Michael's other short films of the Bad era, "Man of the Mirror" tells a story not through performance, but through powerful images of oppression, homelessness, hunger, police brutality and other ills of the world, as well as events and leaders of the 20th century whose work is reflective of the song's message to "make that change." Tweet this: http://bit.ly/1EXAQ85 Post to FB: http://on.fb.me/1zu4InX Buy a shave kit at www.harrys.com and use the promo code SMARTER Next video with Byron: The Archer's Paradox. ⇊⇊⇊⇊⇊ More info Below ⇊⇊⇊⇊⇊ Comment thread on Reddit: http://bit.ly/1GCoZ0t Tweet ideas to me @SmarterEveryDay Byron Ferguson travels the world doing live exhibition. I should note, that Byron doesn't call himself the "Best" archer, or the "Most Amazing" archer or anything like that. These are my words, because to me, he really is the most amazing archer. He's a cool dude with the right balance of humility and confidence, and I have an incredible amount of respect for him as a person. I'm under no obligation to recommend that you hire him for your live event... but I do. Book him through his wife Wanda here under "Exhibition Shooting". http://www.byronferguson.com/ Music is "Empousai" by A Shell In The Pit. Download it here: https://ashellinthepit.bandcamp.com/album/smarter-every-day-vol-ii A huge thank you to Alexander for shooting his compound bow for the high speed, as well as helping me rig up the Harry's Razor pop up target. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://www.smartereveryday.com My Instagram account: http://instagram.com/smartereveryday Patreon Support Link: http://www.patreon.com/smartereveryday Twitter: https://twitter.com/smartereveryday www.facebook.com/SmarterEveryDay ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GET SMARTER SECTION: Circle Packing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_packing Circle Packing Calculator: http://www.packomania.com/ http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/smaller-circles-in-larger-circle-d_1849.html Note: I realize that circle packing isn't a perfect way to quantify this. It was a new geometric concept to me that I had never used and really liked the idea of exploring it. It doesn't take into account an edge hit or grazing shot, for example... but all in all I feel like it's a great way to get a quick feel for the difficulty of hitting a target. Thank you to Matthew Feickert who coded the equation in LaTeX for the video. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Instead of saving for my kids' college, I make videos using the money I would have saved. The thought is it will help educate the world as a whole, and one day generate enough revenue to pay for their education. Until then if you appreciate what you've learned in this video and the effort that went in to it, please SHARE THE VIDEO!
