big river gold fields
Although small by comparison with other mines in the Inangahua gold field, it often out-performed them in terms of financial returns to shareholders. The mine operated from 1882 to 1942. From 1907 to 1924 operations were at their peak, and over 100 people lived in the isolated settlement 30km from Reefton. The poppet head today, without the original weatherboard cladding. Image: K L Jones. The poppet head Today the relics around the mine and settlement sites are a source of fascination and a major attraction in Victoria Forest Park. In 2008 the area was registered as a Category I Historic Place. Of special note are the poppet head and winding plant. Poppet head (c1895) Perched on top of its mullock-covered hill, the impressive 12m structure stands over a 602m deep shaft. Ore was hoisted up the shaft and stored in bins to be processed. Waste rock was dumped nearby creating the mullock heap. The Reefton goldfields were once abundant with such structures. Today this poppet head is the only surviving original on the West Coast and one of only two left in New Zealand, the other being at Oturehua in Central Otago. Winding plant The re-constructed engine house. The poppet head can be seen on top of the mullock-covered hill in the background. Image: K L Jones. The re-constructed engine house The winding engine is the only steam winder left in New Zealand with its boiler intact. The engine house was the control hub for operations in the mine shaft. The steam driven winding engine lowered men and equipment into the mine and raised the gold-bearing quartz that was blasted from the underground reefs. DOC’s work DOC has carried out a range of heritage work at Big River, including restoring the poppet head and re-constructing the engine house. The Indigo Gold Trail represents the first integrated approach to the development of a tourism product based on the history of the discovery and pursuit of gold across Indigo Shire. In and around Beechworth, Chiltern, Rutherglen and Yackandandah, and the villages and countryside in between, evidence of gold mining remains - from the perfectly preserved streetscapes of the towns to modest miners' cottages, from mine shafts and mullock heaps to astonishing water races carved through solid rock; from Chinese Burning Towers and pioneer graves to historic government buildings, schools and museums all dating from those early, heady days of the gold rush of the mid 19th Century. The Indigo Gold Trail ties these many fascinating elements together and offers visitors of all ages a new reason to embark on an entertaining and educational journey of gold discovery through the Shire's picturesque towns and countryside.

Part 2 Gold Hole - Expanding the current window
In this video, I will use the Coiltek 11 Inch Elite over a mullock pile to see if the increased sensitivity will find missed targets. I also walk to the top area above where the main concentration was found - working along the line of test holes. After this I will show you the fringe of the workings and seeing if we can hit any gold for a continued spread. Trying to expand the current window. Some good targets along the way, I will also put together a video soon of opening new windows and finding new grounds, what I do to get these windows and how I work them and read the grounds more thoroughly, also explain the ways that I document the finds to paint a picture and drill down on the runs. Hope you enjoy - be sure to like or throw a comment Regards M.G

Spring gold finds with GPX 5000
HI once again I am gold prospecting in Victoria. Missed the first days finds because I forgot my camera battery. I found three pieces, the largest 0.59 gram, the others between 0.1-0.2 gram. This video picks up proceedings on day 2. I had an enjoyable start to the day meeting IrocOn2 who makes brilliant youtube videos and who is a talented guitarist. Unfortunately it was not until after IrocOn2 left that I jagged a further 3 pieces, again all small but gold is gold! . Enjoy. Willo
