Accurate track planning with the RIEGL RiCOPTER in Spielberg, Austria

The Red Bull Air Race is at the forefront of technology and constantly looking at ways to further advance the ultimate motorsport series in the sky. A team of RIEGL laser experts were on site at the Red Bull Ring measuring and mapping the racetrack with drones and laser precision. RIEGL Laser Measurement GmbH recently scanned the entire Red Bull Ring racetrack with its RIEGL RiCOPTER remotely piloted aircraft system that carries a lightweight laser scanner. From there, the team created a 3D point cloud which gathered information for the Red Bull Air Race aviation team. The information collected is being used for the track-planning tool with 100% realistic scenery. The mapping also takes potential obstacles that could be in the vicinity of the flight path into account. This data is then developed into a simulator for the aviation department with obstacles realistically placed, thanks to the high precision data collected. To cover the Red Bull Ring, the RIEGL team deployed the RiCOPTER for a total of five flights to collect the data. Each flight lasted between 12 and 15 minutes and covered different areas of the circuit. After each flight, the data was downloaded and the UAV was sent airborne again. The RiCOPTER UAV is equipped with a lightweight and compact LiDAR scanner, the VUX-1, developed by RIEGL has a field of view up to 230° and up to two cameras integrated to complement the laser scan data with image data. The laser scanner is capable of producing a 2D or 3D image from the location and is correlated via GPS to make sure that the information is smoothly applicable for further processing. The Red Bull Air Race Team is using RIEGL LiDAR data for the first time in Spielberg but plans to use it for even more locations worldwide and applications in the future. For this particular application, it is currently in the testing and evaluation phase but could help in the future to allow the race judges to assess that pilots stay at the minimum flight altitude, for instance. Leica Geosystems leads the way in High Precision (HP) Fleet Management Systems for Mining, and 2014 is no different. Later this year, Leica Geosystems will release the Jigsaw J2dragline into its HP lineup, which already includes J2drill, J2shovel, J2dozer and J2supervisor. Responding to market feedback, the J2shovel and J2dozer products will be standardised to offer an optional construction module providing HP guidance to execute design projects such as creating ramps, pads and trenches. There has also been a build in market demand for a geosystems HP standalone application solution that enable operation without connection to a centralised server. Future developments will see delivery of J2shovel and J2dozer for standalone with solutions for J2drill and J2supervisor standalone to follow. The “What’s new in High Precision” presentation will introduce J2dragline, review the construction module for J2shovel and J2dozer, and overview the HP standalone application concept.

Using UAS for Efficient and Accurate Topographic Mapping

The high cost of total station surveys or aerial surveys using aircraft can make some organizations think twice about maintaining up-to-date aerial maps. But UAS’s ability to map large areas efficiently and inexpensively, makes it a viable alternative. So, when a new Department of Natural Resources permitting requirement necessitated a quarry manager to have up-to-date topographic data for the site, he reached out to MFA for UAS services. To capture the aerial data, we placed 12 aerial targets for ground control and measured accuracy using a Trimble Geoexplorer 7X unit capable of real-time precision of 0.5 inches (horizontal and vertical). We collected additional GPS check points for a vertical accuracy assessment. The UAS data gathered was developed in to a high-resolution orthomosaic aerial map and a dense 3D point cloud that was used to interpolate a 3D site model. To help the client clearly see important details of the mining site, we made slight modifications to the topographic contours to remove trees, and structures to create a pseudo-digital terrain model for spatial analysis and grading scenarios. MFA used UAS to survey the mining site—with its extreme elevation changes—in just in one 35-minute flight. Watch the video to see the 3D site model of the quarry we created. Inferring Road Maps from GPS Traces

Google Tech Talk March 7, 2013 (more info below) Presented by James Biagioni ABSTRACT Driven by the near-ubiquitous availability of GPS sensors in a variety of everyday devices, the past decade has witnessed considerable interest in the automatic inference and construction of road maps from GPS traces. Existing methods for performing this task can be largely divided into three categories: k-means clustering, trace merging, and kernel density estimation. In this talk I discuss the three classes of existing algorithms guided by examples from canonical work in the literature, and illustrate their strengths and weaknesses. In light of these findings I then introduce and explain the operation of our new hybrid map inference algorithm, developed to overcome these existing methods' limitations with GPS-trace coverage disparity and measurement error. Lastly, I discuss some directions for future work in this problem domain. Saw this out at the field the other day. Guy flying it works for a mapping and surveying company and has brought it out a bit to learn how to fly it The gps and camera info gathered can be stitched together to make full 3d renderings of terrain and landscapes as well as grades and huge stitched together images. Cool design, full gimbled platform for different cameras, and enclosed props, probably to reduce the damage on a tip over or crash. More of these will be coming out as laws for UAVs get less restrictive and we get more people out trying to get business done with UAVs. Thanks for watching, more RC next week Ronin

Michael has responsibility for Caterpillar’s technology strategy for both surface and underground mining operations. For more than 20 years, he has been engaged in all aspects of Caterpillar’s mining technology programs, including automation of large mining trucks, track type dozers, rotary blasthole drills and underground LHD’s. During 2013 and 2014, he launched the Caterpillar Autonomous Haulage System in Western Australia with both BHP and Fortescue Metals Group. The Fortescue Metals Group project is one of the largest automation projects in mining, with 55 x 240 ton trucks in operation and further expansion to over 160 trucks recently announced. Having a unique perspective on over 25 years of work on autonomy at Caterpillar, Michael presented "The Journey of Using Autonomous Machines in Mining" to the 2017 Convocation of the Professional Engineering Societies in Washington, DC. This webinar builds on that presentation with recent updates.
